The term “National ID Card” is used frequently within international relations and in the banking and security fields, as well as in government. In simple terms, a national ID card is a portable, usually plastic card with an embedded information, which a person is obligated or mandated to carry as proof of their identity. Some states in the USA require that their residents carry some form of national ID card.

There are many reasons why a person may need to acquire a national ID card. A passport might be lost, stolen or destroyed, or a birth certificate might have been lost or misplaced. If you fall under any of these categories, then it’s likely that you would be interested in learning more about how to get an official national identification card. However, before delving too deeply into this topic, you may want to ask yourself if you even have an ID card to begin with!

One of the first things you should do if you do not already own a card is to determine which state you actually live in. Some states issue their own IDs — while others only issue them to residents of their respective counties. Each state issues their own cards — and they often do so differently. Some examples of state-issued ID cards include:

Driver’s license — The driver’s license is a national ID card just like the drivers’ license issued by your state. You can obtain a driver’s license from any U.S. Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). It allows you to legally operate a vehicle, without obtaining your parents’ permission or without possessing any other type of non-driver’s license. You may also be able to get your national ID card from an authorized agent of the DMV in any U.S. state. However, in order to legally drive to another country, you will need the passport.

Passport — This card also serves as your national ID card. Your passport serves as your proof of citizenship if you plan to travel outside of your country. You can also get an international driver’s license or an international identification card from any U.S. embassy. The card usually contains the same information that the national card has, such as name, address, phone number, birth date, profile photo and fingerprints.

In addition, there are some other types of identification cards besides the standard national ID card. There are the Medicare card, which are given to senior citizens; the EIC, which are an emergency international emergency card; and the ISEC, which are an employment identification card for those in the United States military. Of course, these cards do not include the American flag! If you are currently getting your identification cards, you can choose among the many options available today!
