Tongue problems can cause bad breath. They can even cause bad breath in someone who isn’t suffering from a bad mouth odor. The cause of halitosis (bad breath) is generally the result of bacteria buildup in the mouth. Many of these bacteria are anaerobes, bacteria that live in moist places such as the gums, on and around the tongue, and between the teeth. Because the tongue is an area rich in moisture, the anaerobic bacteria thrive there. The tongue is therefore a prime location for bacteria to breed.

Tongue movement problems most frequently are caused by nerve damage, specifically damage to the tongue’s papillae, which are tiny projections at the tip and sides of the tongue that allow it to curl up and move when your mouth is open. Very rarely, problems with moving the tongue can also be the result of a more serious disorder in which the thin band of soft tissue that attaches the tongue to your lower jaw is abnormally short. This is known as ankyloglossia and is sometimes accompanied by severe dental or oral problems, such as a misaligned jaw.

Other common causes of bad breath include infections of the upper respiratory system, including sinusitis and pneumonia. Sometimes an infection of the tongue can be associated with a nasal infection. Sometimes people get tongue scrapers as a result of having their tonsils removed or having a tonsillectomy. The scraping of the tongue is sometimes mistaken for a treatment for bad breath, but the reality is that it is a sign of discomfort rather than a cure. If you are interested in removing your tongue, keep reading.

The first step in removing your tongue, whether it is part of your tonsils or not, is to gargle with a mixture of salt and water. You will also need to take a scraping tool with you to do this, which is similar to a Q-tip. You should start by applying pressure to feel for any sore spots in the tongue. Then apply the solution to any swollen areas. If your tongue feels raw, try applying pressure on it in a circular motion.

Once you have done all of this and you are feeling somewhat better, you can work on the problem from the inside. There may be something in the mouth that is causing the odor of bad breath to linger. Perhaps you have a build-up of dead cells and bacteria, or perhaps you have an imbalance of small particles that is allowing food particles to get trapped and then decompose, releasing bad smelling gases. Treating the source from the inside out will help to eliminate the problem from the start.

In many cases, the scraping of your tongue is enough to get rid of bad breath, and you can forget about the tongue scraper. However, if you continue to experience halitosis, it may be worthwhile to invest in one. It may save you a lot of embarrassment and time trying to cover your mouth while you speak, especially if you have guests over.
